How To Communicate With Your Doctor

We understand that there might be things that you are uncomfortable to share with your doctor. It’s your personal life after all. However, not telling everything to your doctor comes with consequences which could affect your health . So what is the preferred communication between a patient and a doctor?

Everything Should Remain Private

Most patients fear that if they tell the truth, their doctor might judge them. Let us remind you that doctors aren’t there to gossip about you. They don’t work for media. Doctors are asking you questions because these questions are related to your health. The answers you give them could lead them to the right diagnosis of what’s wrong with you and how to treat it. Every doctors sworn an oath that anything that a patient discuss should be private. If they did, then they will surely lose their license, their bread and butter.

Two-way Communication

When your doctor tells you that you have to go on a surgery, you have the right to say no.  A patient should convey right away his/her disagreement in order to find out if there is an alternative method. When it comes to successful doctor and patient relationship, honesty is the best policy. This is really important because they might prescribe you a medication that may become harmful for you because you didn’t tell him about your allergies. Another example would be, forgetting to take the pills they prescribed you on a regular basis. If you are forgetful at least be honest, so your doctor can find out another way to help you.

The Right for a Second Opinion

Doctors cannot pressure you to follow what they suggest. You can be submissive but by any chance that you have doubts about your doctor’s diagnosis, exhaust the option for a second opinion. This happens and your doctor should be understanding about this.

Partnership to Create Wellness

Always remember that your doctor is not the enemy but rather your illness. Remember that your doctor is there to be your ally in combating that illness or disease that’s bothering you. There were some thinking that doctors only care for money. We can’t look at them that way, otherwise there would be no trust. You’ll end up giving him the wrong details about your habits, health, symptoms and other medical history. Before going to a practitioner, ask people for their recommendation of who is the best doctor who can work with you. Hospitals are not exempted in our uniqueness and individual preferences.  So if it is your first time meeting that doctor, it would be best to get some feedback from previous patients.
