COSMETIC DENTISTRY - A DENTISTS GUIDE
Cosmetic
Dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry involves procedures to replace, reposition or restore teeth. Primarily it is done toincrease the aesthetic value of a patient's smile. Uneven teeth can be gradually guided to their right place using orthodontics. Ill-figured teeth may be covered with artificial materials such as porcelain. In rare cases, teeth can be removed, and replaced by artificial ones.
Orthodontic procedure moves teeth by installing plastic or metal braces to slowly push or pull them into proper alignment with the rest of the teeth. Treatment can take as long as 2 years, with timely visits to inspect, tighten and readjust the braces. In some cases, it is performed along with jaw repositioning or orthognathic surgery. Tooth replacement or restoration may follow orthodontic procedures, after the teeth have been moved into their proper locations.
Risks linked with orthodontic work include; Problems with oral hygiene that lead to non-removable marks on the teeth, cheeks and gums might be injured when the braces rub against the soft tissue, after the braces have been removed, the corrected teeth may return to their original place, and teeth roots may shrink
The procedure typically requires no anesthesia. Braces will need to stay on teeth for up to 2 years the patient may feel discomfort at first and every after the adjustment of the brace. The final result will immediately be noticeable after the braces have been removed and the effects are Long lasting
Teeth can be restored and resurfaced through various treatments. synthetic or Natural bone material can be grafted to the jawbone to build up the facial and jawbone shape. Surfaces of each tooth can be covered with an artificial materials like porcelain. A tooth can be built up using another substance onto which the new surface is applied. Teeth might need to be strengthened to serve as anchors for replacement teeth.
The risks related with tooth restoration can include; an allergic reaction to local anesthesia, and need for further treatment such as root canal therapy, gum recontouring, or tissue grafting
This operation needs general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation for some procedures
this procedure typically allows you to return home the same day the patient will experience moderate soreness in the jaw and mouth. Within months for restorations, slightly longer for restorations on dental implants before the results are noticeable. Patient may need replacement at 10-year intervals on average.
Sometimes teeth must be removed because they are too weak to anchor the artificial teeth. Replacement teeth will be installed either as a removable bridge, which is held by the surrounding teeth, or implanted onto a metal post. The metal post or an osseointegrated titanium implant is implanted into the jaw and allowed to heal for several months before installing the tooth or teeth onto it.
The risks involved with the dental implant tooth replacement include; intolerance of anesthesia, infection caused by the implant. If infection occurs after the implant, the implant may have to be removed, loss of bone or soft tissue next or near to the implant making corrective surgery necessary, and swelling and discoloration for 7 to 10 days
This procedure also needs general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. it takes one to two hours, the patient should expect bruising and soft tissue swelling. It takes 4 to 18 months after tooth has been attached to bridge or post. The effects are long lasting, in comparison to conventional tooth replacement
