GYNAECOLOGY - A DOCTORS GUIDE

Gynaecology refers to the study and health of the female reproductive system. The female reproductive system consists of several different areas vagina, uterus and ovaries.   To most the subject of gynaecology is a highly confusing subject, we hope this brief guide will help.

In gynaecology as in most medicine the most instrument of diagnosis are the patient’s clinical history and an examination of the patient.  The things that separates gynaecology from the majority of most other examinations the how personal they are.  An examination of the vagina will mean the use of a tool called the speculum which is used to retract the tissues of the vagina to allow the cervix to be examined.

Gynaecologists will often use multiple therapies depending on what the problem may be that they are attempting to treat.   Standard drugs such as antibiotics and diuretics may be used for pre and post operative management.

The foundation of gynaecological therapy is surgery.  Gynaecologists have no always been thought of as surgeons but this has changed as have attitudes to the entire subject.
